Honoring Black History Month in 2023

This Black History Month, NAMI DC is honoring local mental health hero Dr. William B. Lawson for his dedication to providing care and support to those affected by mental illness.

This Black History Month, NAMI DC honors a local mental health hero, William B. Lawson, MD, PhD, DLFAPA.

Dr. Lawson is a nationally recognized clinical and research psychiatrist, professor, administrator, and author. Throughout his distinguished career, in faculty and senior administrative positions, he has championed underserved racial and ethnic minorities, generating funding William B. Lawson, MD, PhD, DLFAPA and pursuing innovative programs to improve their treatment outcomes.

He has received many national awards, including several for his work using research, education, and clinical care to reduce disparities in care:

  • American Psychiatric Foundation Award for Advancing Minority Mental Health
  • Solomon Carter Fuller Award for African American Pioneers, American Psychiatric Association
  • Jeanne Spurlock, M.D. Minority Fellowship Achievement Award, American Psychiatric Association
  • Exemplary Psychiatrist Award and Outstanding Psychologist Award, National Alliance for the Mentally Ill

NAMI DC honors Dr. Lawson for advancing social justice in mental health and substance disorder treatment for minorities. We thank him for his past service on the NAMI DC Board of Directors, and for sharing his knowledge and understanding on our webinar “Cultural Barriers in Mental Health Care.”
